Devon: a Denim jacket

Designer Notes

I Designed Devon because I had a nice denim jacket that I wanted to make available to others.

Devon is based on the Bent body block. Being a jacket, it has a considerable amount of ease added.

The design is inspired by denim jackets my partner has, and some patterns I’ve seen. Most denim jackets do not have set in sleeves, but since this is based on Bent, it does. It makes top stitching the armscye a little more challenging.

note
Armhole

You can run into issues with a too-small armhole with certain biceps measurements. To correct this, turn on “Legacy armhole depth” in the “Advanced” options. When in doubt, look at the armhole shape, or make a muslin first.

What You Need

To make Devon, you will need the following:

Fabric Options

If you are making a Devon to see how it fits we recommend a fabric such as Calico (Muslin) or a cheaper fabric that has no stretch in it. The drape will be different than a heavy denim, but it will show you if there are fitting issues.

You can use scraps of fabrics from your stash so don’t worry about buying fabric specifically for making a muslin. If you have made a Bent before with your measurements, that should give you andindication on how well the pattern will fit you. Devon is based on Bent, with a considerable amount of ease added to it.

note
Interfacing

If you use medium to heady denim, no interfacing is required for the jacket. If you use a lighter material, you should interface the following parts:

  • Cuff
  • Front facing
  • Pocket flap
  • Upper collar
  • Waistband
